What Are Categorization Rules?
Expert plan feature: Categorization rules are available on the Expert plan.
Rules let you define automatic categorization based on merchant name patterns. When a transaction's merchant name matches a rule's pattern, it is automatically assigned the specified category and subcategory.
How Rules Work
Rules are applied before AI categorization during the upload process:
- Your rules are checked first (in priority order)
- Learned merchant patterns from your previous corrections
- AI categorization as a fallback
This means your rules always take precedence over AI suggestions.
Creating a Rule
- Go to Rules in the sidebar
- Click Add Rule
- Enter a merchant pattern (substring match, case-insensitive)
- Select a category and optionally a subcategory
- Optionally add tags to auto-apply
- Set the priority (lower number = higher priority)
Example Rules
| Pattern | Category | Subcategory |
|---|---|---|
| REWE | Food & Dining | Groceries |
| NETFLIX | Entertainment | Streaming |
| DB Bahn | Transportation | Public Transit |
| AMAZON | Shopping | Online Shopping |
Managing Rules
- Edit: Change the pattern, category, or priority
- Toggle active/inactive: Temporarily disable a rule without deleting it
- Reorder: Change priority by dragging rules up or down
- Delete: Remove a rule permanently
Merchant Patterns (Automatic)
In addition to your explicit rules, WonderFunds automatically learns merchant patterns from your corrections. When you change a transaction's category, WonderFunds remembers the merchant name and applies the same category next time.
These learned patterns have a confidence score that increases with each confirmation.
